I'm doing a T-5 swap in my 97 2.3L. Can I walk into a parts store any say I need a clutch kit for "x"? If so, what vehicle is "x"? :icon_confused:

I wouldn't get a full clutch kit unless your current pressure plate is wore out.

Otherwise, you just order a new clutch disc (get the right diameter) for a T5 since it has a ten spline input shaft.

Oh, and have your flywheel resurfaced before you install all that together. It makes the clutch disc last longer after properly broken in.

wouldn't surfacing the flywheel roughen it up and therefore make the clutch wear out quicker? just saying....i've never actually bothered to do it and never had any problems with slipping or anything.

When the flywheel is broken in, it's really smooth and shiny, but with a new (rough) clutch disc against the super smooth flywheel... It won't ever grip like it should because both disc and flywheel should be broken in together.

makes sense, but we've never had a slipping problem and we never resurface them, so oh well. most clutches in my family go over 200k anyways.

Thanks,
I have 197K on my 97. I just figured it would be a good idea to replace everything. The clutch has never slipped. Still the stock one. Figures, the clutch would outlast the trans.

If you're replacing the clutch you should replace everything while you have the tranny dropped. The kit comes with a new pressure plate, clutch and the bearings. And the kits are cheap.
