I did a clutch, slave, and master cylinder on a 98 2.5 2wd. We can get the clutch bled but over night it starts to go soft again. The only thing I haven't replaced is the line from the master to the slave. Any idea why it would do this?
Thanks
Bryan

It was doing it after I did the clutch and slave so I did the master last night and it still does it. Might be the slave I guess.

If you used rebuilt parts that's probably the problem. I ALWAYS use new hydraulic parts- just not worth saving $20 or whatever on rebuilt crap. If your line was leaking it should be showing fluid since there is good pressure on it when the clutch gets pushed down. If the slave or master is defective it can by-pass fluid internally.

It's getting air in somehow. I'd buy a pre-bled master cylinder assembly from rock auto. I've spent hours trying to bleed master assemblies and there's really no easy way to do it.

You can try replacing the hydraulic line but if I were you I'd get the whole thing and save the headache.

You may not be getting all the air out. They can be a real bastard to bleed in the car.

I picked it up again last night. When I got in it there was almost no pressure on the pedal. After pumping it for a minute or 2 the pedal felt good again. That must mean that there is air in the system right?

You have air getting into the system, or you haven't got the air out. Sounds to me like the system just has air in it still. From what I've heard these hydraulic clutch systems in the early bronco 2's and rangers are a pain in the ass to bleed.

Gee... I just replaced my cylinders and I bled it out in about ten minutes by myself. Was way easier than the Fiat X/19 I did many years ago. If you are getting air into the system look at the quick connector on the slave. If that O-ring has an issue it may hold pressure when pedal is applied but once it relaxes it allows air to seep back past it. You may or may not have fluid dripping out of it. Look for a fluid trail down the bell housing. I had to replace a brand new O-ring when I did mine as after it sat overnight it was leaking past in a relaxed state. It was not leaking under pressure though.
