Clutch Interchangability

What's the earliest year that I can use on my 95? Clutch kits (clutchcityonline) get ridiculously more expensive from 94 ($165) to 95 ($245).

To make sure I'm getting all I need:
Throwout bearing
Pilot bearing
Clutch disk
Pressure plate
Flywheel
Slave
Alignment tool

Never done a clutch before, but how hard can it be? :icon_surprised:

The clutch kit gets more expensive because the clutch is different.

The later clutch really is "Better" for that higher price.

the two hardest parts of the job?

Getting the four driveshaft bolts off (12mm 12point socket required 1/2" drive and a LONG breaker bar)

And wrestling the transmission back up into the truck.

the trans weighs about 90lbs and doing it without a friend
would be "Stupid" unless you've done it before and even if
you have done the job before you would probably think lifting
the trans alone is stupid.

Find a machine shop that has a rotary blanchard grinder for suracing flywheels.
typically they charge $35-$40 to do this job.

It is worth every penny to have your flywheel cut.

Compared to the possible heartache and annoyance of a chattering
clutch if you don't

Thanks. I figured the style changed, by looking at the pictures.

Is the Ranger clutch unique to the Ranger?

I suppose 245 is probably about as low as I'm going to find, huh?

For example, the clutch from a 1990 Bronco II (2.9L, 6 cyl) has the same specifications (according to LUK). The two discs look different, but will they interchange? Are there more specifications you need other than

Outside Diameter: 8 7/8"
Spline: 1"
Teeth: 23

Actually I think a '95-up should have a 9-1/8" disc.

there was also a change in the pressure plate for more clamping force which was why ford changed both the clutch and the master cylinder for 1993.

Interesting .. I copied that from information directly from the LUK website. Is the Ranger clutch exclusive to the Ranger? I know the previous years, some of the parts were interchangable between the Explorer and maybe the Bronco.

Just curious what the size is for the Ranger clutch disc? 9 1/8" or 8 7/8"?

My Centerforce came from a XR4Ti that blew a rod 10k miles after the guy put the clutch in. After doing some research, I found it wasn't a direct replacement (according to part numbers) for my truck, but I was broke and it had been sitting on my shelf in the garage for a while when my tranny went out, so I did a test fit that turned into a permanent install and all has been well since. Harbor Freight sells a scissor style tranny jack for about $80 I believe. I bought one and it's worked out just fine, just can't remember at the moment if it was $80.

When I remove my driveshaft bolts I use a short stub 12mm
12 point combination box wrench and a 2 lbs sledge hammer. Works all the time.
I think factory use locktite on those bolts when they are first put on.

Yep, mine was $80 shipping included. I would recommend this trans jack to anyone planning on dropping a trans by themselves; nice quality for the price.:icon_cheers:

Check rockauto.com. Thats where I got my clutch kit. And even after shipping I still paid just under 160 I think, which was just under 100 bucks cheaper than I could get it locally.

For the 1995 model year, there is a division at the month of October. So, before Oct, a different style clutch fits vs. after October.

Does this mean if my Truck was manufactured in Jan of 1995, I need to get the pre-Oct clutch kit? I hope so.

I hate to bump, but I haven't found this info anywhere.
