i have an 88 ranger 2.9 v6 5 speed. i cant get my clutch to engage. i can be in first and release the clutch and it doesnt stall. this is true for all my gears including reverse. is this my pressure plate? clutch plate?
thanks

Check anbd bleed your clutch, it should be hydraulic in '88 right? Other wise your clutch plate is beyond worn. Even a bad clutch should mildly engage. If not hydraulic, I would check your shift fork and all clutch linkages.

It's hydraulic, and all those things that froggy mentioned would cause release issues, not engagement issues. Same with a bad pressure plate. If the PP is bad it shouldn't release.

I'd guess that its time for a new clutch, and probably a new flywheel as well.

Um, especially with 120,000ish.

The average expected service life of a clutch is 100,000 miles. Less if you do a lot of city driving, a bit more if you are on the highway all the time. If you've worn it down to the point where you can let the pedal out in gear and get no engagement I'd wager you've put rivets into the flywheel (but I'm not sure how you could have missed the horrible noise that should have made) and destroyed the flywheel.

The other possibility is that your trans is FUBAR, but since it happens in all gears the clutch is a more likely culprit.

You sure no one stole your drive shaft?

Also, when you let the clutch out, does the pitch of the sound the truck makes change? It should change slightly as the weight of the things in the trans start dragging on the engine.

checking the slave, master, fluid level etc would be if his clutch would not release

but it would be extreemly unlikely for the clutch hydraulics to cause the clutch to become stuck "open"

What is FAR more likely is:
a)the clutch disc "broke" either the friction material disintegrated'and fell off the "marcel" (the wave wafer spring)
OR
b)The Marcell spring broke and seperated mfrom the clutch hub
OR
c)The input shaft of the transmission simply snapped off.

I've had BOTH a & b happen to me personally and I've seen "c" on atleast three occasions.

There's another possibility with similar symptoms...

I've had my transmission output shaft SNAP OFF between the trans and T-case, this results in no movement in any gear...

What did you do to that poor thing?
