So I've just put in a new clutch press, disc, and slave cylinder (carrier bearing included).. Started bleeding the clutch to find out that the pedal was going in without any effort, even though no air was going out of the system. With the engine running, it seems like the transmission is always in neutral, I can easily switch gears without even stepping on the clutch. When looking through the inspection hole in the tranny it doesn't seem like anything moves when depressing the pedal....

I called it a day today and plan to see if I can fix this tomorrow, but would like to know if there is anything I should be looking for.... any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Did you compare new parts to old parts? Sounds like you may have an incorrect piece.

Thanks for the suggestion, I did check both parts and looked the same. Then I plugged the old leaking slave and asked my wife to press the pedal and waddayaknow, it didn't move either.... so, after pulling the transmission, checking if I put the clutch backwards, checking pretty much everything, it turned out that the master cyl was allowed to drain completely by my buddy when we were bleeding the system the night before...... BUT, it didn't end up there:

This morning I did all I mentioned before... I put the trans back in, re-bled the darned system and everything seemed fine; there is still just a little spongy feel at the pedal at the beginning but nothing that a little more thorough bleeding won't solve. So I start putting everything back together, cat back in, Y-pipe, all the works, AND... when trying to connect the O2 sensors, couldn't find one of the connectors..... fearing the worst I crawled to the back of the engine from the top, and yes..... little phawker found its way between the tranny and the engine. 2 hours after that got it out and got back to where I was... needless to say the wires got messed up so I spliced them and tried to put it back so I wouldn't have to splice the sensor, and when I started the engine, and why not, I got a CEL.......
(PHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWK!!!!!! @#$%^&*!!!!!!!!!!!!) Soooo... first theory for next weekend (Traveling to LA all week) will see if I accidentally flipped the O2s when connecting them or if I will end up going to the u-pull to get a new connector.....

This transmission fix has been a living hell since the beginning.... so far, 2 defective slaves, 1 master cyl, 1 clutch and a lot of swearing, scratches, bruises and wife rants...

But noooooooo, I wouldn't take it to a shop..... After so many hours invested in this, I need to finish this one myself out of self respect....

Just for the heck of it...did you bench bleed the master cylinder before installing it? With the angle that it sits in the firewall, it will not bleed after it's installed in the truck.

Thanks, I bench bled it the first time I installed it, and had to remove it yesterday and bench bleed it again. The pedal was rock solid afterwards and just a little bit spongy after my half-assed slave cyl bleeding which I did just to check I had cylinder movement this time, which I did. At least I know I'm on the right track this time...

Thanks again for the suggestion! :icon_thumby:

The reason I asked is I just did my clutch as well. I bench bled the master and slave all connected, disconnected the slave, installed the transmission, and it still didn't release properly.

However, after a suggestion from a buddy, I let it gravity bleed for almost 10 minutes and it's way better than what it was before. Basically just put a piece of tubing on the slave bleeder (to stop it from dripping back into the transmission), crack the bleeder, and let it flow for a while. Just be sure that the resevoir doesn't get low. Try that and see what happens....it's easier than taking out the master cylinder again....

The Nightmare is over...

Well, coming back from LA I had just enough time to stop by the junkyard and get the screwed up connector. As it turns out I did connect the O2s correctly (Thanks a lot Earl! :icon_thumby:), so I pull the harness just enough to splice the cables and I hear a snap (this is when all of you say oh, no!)... I messed up the camshaft sensor... yup, the one that comes as a full syncro/sensor unit.. I ended up taking out the upper intake manifold just to be able to do things right... In the end, I was able to repair the sensor but took me all day.... Don't you love it when things get ridiculously complicated??? On the bright side I gravity bled the system (thanks for the tip tbird!) and also bled the system the "traditional" way.. the truck shifts nice and smooth now and pedal travel seems to be where its supposed to... I left the front drive shaft out as next week I need to take out the front diff since I have a nasty oil seal leak that needs to be taken care of... I was supposed to do that THIS weekend.... man, I haven't been able to go wheeling for a while, been using all my weekend time fixing stuff... hopefully next Sunday will be my day....

Well, the nightmare is over..... for now... :icon_rofl:
