Clutch advice

Hello I'm looking for a little advice or maybe an educated guess. My 88 2x4 2.3 5 speed Ranger's clutch seems to have very little travel needed to engage when pressing on the clutch pedal. It has been this way for the first day I owned it. The previous owner said he had replaced the transmission. That is all I know about the history on it.

The problem now is the pedal seems to feel funny it doesn't feel like the clutch is slipping but more like a ketch in the pedal kinda a click feel when pressure is taken off the pedal. Also now and then it goes into gear a little hard. Is this an indicator of something or just me being paranoid.

thanks in advance
