Cluster swap, some gauges work, some don't

I just finished cluster swap, donor 94 Explorer with tach, to my 94 Ranger w/o tack.

Swap when fine; Speedo works, tach works, water temp works, oil pressure works, BUT amp/battery gauge read extreme high AND fuel gauge pegs extreme full - then as you drive, slowly goes down to E.

Anyone had this happen?

Could I have flipped upside down the multi plug on left side to cause this?

Any help is apppreciated.

You can't flip the plugs, they're keyed. Are you sure the donor cluster was good? I had a cluster go bad and the fuel gauge did something similar to what you're saying (although it'd go down to E, then slowly go back up to F).

As for the battery gauge, someone could've pulled the needle off and not put it back on correctly.

Have you tried putting the removable pc board from your old cluster into the new one? I did the same swap a few months back and read somewhere that a few people had got some bad ones in their replacement clusters. My swap was plug and go. Locovaca has a good point as far as the fuel gauge goes.

The removable circuit board controls the fuel gauge.
What else does it control?
I have looked but can't find any info on what it controls.

when i swapped my cluster(99) for the white faced sport-trac one, i gave my old cluster to my brother(00) his truck didnt had tach, so i swapped his pc board to the new cluster and the fuel gauge wasnt working, i replaced it with the pc board that came on the white cluster and it works fine, i swapped the pc board my truck had to the new cluster i have now and works fine

maybe the plug just isn't quite all the way in there? had a problem with that, but i was also missing several of the lights.

im not sure, but i guess the tech library has a how to swap cluster for the 94 models, i saw there something about some resistors u need to bypass, not so sure, but u should take a look, maybe u find something there:icon_thumby:

are you 100% positive that the "new" assembly is also from a 94 ? the 89-92 have a different printed circuit than the 93-94
