Clunking when accelerating

The rear is a solid axel held in place by the spring mounts. The front is not solid and needs to be supported from behind...just take a look at the radius arm and what it connects to and where it attaches to...pretty much a direct line back from the front wheels...

I'll give them a look. At 220,000 they probably could use replacing anyways.

And old Fords with a closed drive line did indeed have radius arms on the rear axel that bolted to the front of the drive line. There was a really big X-member at the back of the trans. On those the truck was actually pulled along by the engine's front motor mounts and the transmissions rear mount. The rear wheels turned pushing on the back of the trans, that pushed on the engine. Didn't change until they got the open drive line in 49.

They were built hell for stout. And, just one u-joint at the back of the trans. It ran in trans lube and never wore out. But, because they had a transverse front and rear springs (just one spring going left to right) the body roll was something you had to experience to believe. Take a look at some of those old gangster movie chase scenes and watch them going around a corner
