I have a 2004 Fx4 level ll. I took it off roading the other day and like a day later when i would go to turn left my whole rear end would clunk and jerk real bad...the only way i can describe it is like when your in 4 wheel drive the tires are gripping real tight cause the tires are working against each other so the back tires were still doing that even when the 4 wheel drive was off and it would clunk in the back.so now any turn i make it clunks the rear and jerks real bad like my rear axle is about to come off. So i checked the differential and everything seems fine could that be something in the drive shaft or maybe a short in the 4 wheel drive switch not disengaging right...i dont know any help would be awesome.New at this so not sure if im explaing right thanks though.

Your truck, being a 2004, has a live front axle. no hubs. so the only thing disengaged when you're in 2wd is the t-case. So i'd say that as long as your transfer case shifts ok, 4wd engagement is not a problem. My guess is that you've fried the clutches in your LSD, and it's not functioning properly.

engage the 4wd on a dirt road. then disengage it and back up a couple feet.

sounds like the 4wd isnt disengaging all the way.

if that aint it, change your rearend fluid and put the limited slip additive in it.

after driving it for a while, it should go away. its a common ford problem.

since yours is an FX4 you may have a Torsen Limited Slip in the back especially since its a Level 2 in that case you have a gear driven limited slip so A. you don't have LSD clutches B. you won't need the friction modifier.

Correct me if im wrong folks.

yes it is a torsen limited slip, i already tried engaging and disengaging the 4x4 multiple times and that didnt work either ....does anyone think i could be the slip yoke on the drive shaft maybe not being greased enough?

Check your brake drums...could be a brake shoe dragging. I don't know if you have drums or discs.

putter up on stands put the trans in neutral and turn your rear wheels and see if the front ones turn too

when i was checking the differential i took the back wheels off to check for play on the bearings but the cover on the drum brake wouldnt come off. So i just left it as is and didnt think nothing of it cause i was in kinda of a rush.

do you mean the steering wheel jerks real bad?

no read the first description for further explanation......its the back differential clunking when i make a right turn or any turn at that.
