I have only used a vise to press out old caps. I use a mid sized ballpeen to tap them in.

yeah i tried that with my rear ujoints with a medium bench vice. i sorta cracked the vice in half...whoops!
guess i need a bigger vice. and a shop of my own to go with the new vice!
I've done that too. In my case the vice was already broken once before though.
You gotta be smart about it. If it's about to crack stop, take it out, smack it around with a hammer, and then spray it up good with PB.
