One last issue to resolve on my truck. I have a clunk that initially i thought was a bad ujoint. I have checked them a few times they seem to be fine. The balancer thing that goes around the transmission output shaft was loose so I removed that. The clunk seems like it is coming from the transmission area. My cross member is bent(anyone know where i can get a new one) and the mount for the tranny is a little loose. could that be causing the clunk. The clutch seems to work fine and does not slip. could a bad pressure plate cause this issue. it kind of feels like the throttle is sticking and then it clunks, but i don't think that is it...........any feedback would be appreciated.

when is it clunking? when you start out , stopping , etc? how bad is your crossmember bent? if its bent to the point that the trans and/or driveline is out of align, then I would start with that first and go from there. should be able to find a crossmember at a junkyard or maybe ebay or craigslist. could also maybe be slop in the rearend. just my opinion.

Sounds like the notorious driveshaft clunk, Mine does it too and I am pretty sure its that spline thing on the rear driveshaft that covered by a boot. There is some TSB about it and a special kit you get from ford to repplace the grease with something that removes the sound...

I don't have any boot on my driveshaft. I did replace the tranny mount and that helped a little but still have a little clunk I think I will post in the transmission forum. Thx for the help. :)

final question.. i have a 1 piece drive shaft with a slip yoke that slides into the tranny........last time i removed the ds i slapped on some multipurpose high temp grease on the slip yoke.......am i supposte to be using a special lube on this thing

I think that may be your problem... thats why the clunking is going on my truck but I have the boot with the slip yoke in the middle instead of at the end of the tranny (same part in different areas), I believe it would require the special grease that ford suggest. But then again I don't know 2wd's too well.

rock the driveshaft back and forth and see where the play is. could also be a probalem with the rear end.

Weird Tranny clunk problem resolved...
3.0 4x4 with new transmission. Problem: with truck in drive, foot on brake. Letting off brake, and beginning intial acceleration. The tranny seemed to clunk(as if the ujoints,or driveshaft was bad) and samething would happen after a complete stop. New front rotors, pads and rear shoes and springs. Mechanic says the the leafsprings and shackles were the cause. So,they were also replaced. Yet still a clunk! so after more inspection. It just happened to be the rear wheel brake cylinders were shot. Unfortunately, the mech that did the brake job, didnt replace them. And, the actual clunk, really didnt seem like a brake issue. Hope this helps somebody else with the same problem.
