OK........... my 2.3 97 5spd 2wd reg cab step side work truck....... seems to be running great, still getting 26mpg heat everything works like a dream.

But I've noticed that when I first start it there is an audible clunk (not metallic more like a rubber mallet slapping an anvil lightly) and it feels rough (rocks the whole truck momentarily)
then it is just purring like a kitten.

There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the truck, but what is this clunk sensation I'm getting?

It did it some before the cold weather (i had thought maybe an idler pully was freazing up or grabbing making the starter break it free) but it does it warm or cold weather. It doesn't do it everytime....... mostly just the first startup of the day or if it has sat several hours.

any idea's from the world of RangerSperts? (that's like a ranger, expert)

Just a thought to isolate if it I'd the starter. If you parked on a hill and pop started it in the morning you could tell if it is starter related. You also could pull the belt off and see what happens when you start it cold
