If I push the cluch pedal all the way to the floor(with the engine running) and then bring it up to engage the transmission the transmission engagement point is about 2 inches before the end of the upward travel, is this correct? Other manual shift vehicles I have driven the engagement point was about 2 to 3 inches off the floor?

For a 2.9 clutch, that sounds about right. You may need a new clutch soon, but that sounds about right.

To get a lower engagement point, switch to a 4.0L clutch and flywheel.

Mine has a fluid reservoir in the corner of the engine bay next to the brake fluid reservoir, I assume yours does too. Check to make sure it is topped off. (it's possible to leak it away, My 85 BII did) I agree with adsm08 that it sounds like you're about ready for a new clutch, though.
I assume yours is stock. I found when I did my M5OD swap that between the BIIs and the Explorers, there are at least three different pushrod lengths. I had all three. I ended up taking the longest one and shortening it to where I felt it was just right. (I had just installed a new 4.0 clutch, master cylinder, and slave cylinder, and used the clutch petal from my old 85 BII).

It's different in every RBV I've ever driven, don't worry about it.
