Well last thursday i started doing a spring tune up to my 96 (plugs, wires, oil and filter, and front brakes)
I was doing my spark plugs and wires, while my dad was letting the oil drain, After the oil drained he put the new filter on (FRAM p/n CPH8A, with the sure grip, i know thats the one that works on the OHV 4.0L because i use it every time). I had just finished putting the last plug and wire together and he topped up the oil. I decided to take it out for a drive, assuming my dad had done everything correctly. I had gone about 3 miles from my house, and started seeing alot of white smoke and smelling burning oil. I turned around and started heading home to see what the problem was, and about 5 minutes from my house the old 4.0L started ticking like a diesel. I knew i had run out of oil somehow so when i got home i decided to take a look. Turns out my dad didnt take the old rubber seal off the filter holder on the motor and the new oil i had put in blew out of the filter that was already on there and went everywhere (all underneath on the diff, exhaust, tranny- EVERYWHERE). When i got home i had about 1/2 a quart of oil left in the motor. I was so pissed so i went down and bought 5 more quarts of oil (in an attempt to save the ticking motor) along with a V6 Formula Engine Restorer (comes in a can). I drained the remaining oil, topped up the motor again and took the rubber seal from the oil filter off the motor. Started it up oil started running through and the valve ticking didn't go away all of a sudden, just quieted down a bit. I drove it down my street and sure enough the ticking has stopped and has run like a champ ever since.
Thought i'd let you guys read this little **** up I did, and let it be a good reminder to always take the old seal off the motor before you put a filter on, or you'll end up with a siezed up motor LOL.
