Well last thursday i started doing a spring tune up to my 96 (plugs, wires, oil and filter, and front brakes)

I was doing my spark plugs and wires, while my dad was letting the oil drain, After the oil drained he put the new filter on (FRAM p/n CPH8A, with the sure grip, i know thats the one that works on the OHV 4.0L because i use it every time). I had just finished putting the last plug and wire together and he topped up the oil. I decided to take it out for a drive, assuming my dad had done everything correctly. I had gone about 3 miles from my house, and started seeing alot of white smoke and smelling burning oil. I turned around and started heading home to see what the problem was, and about 5 minutes from my house the old 4.0L started ticking like a diesel. I knew i had run out of oil somehow so when i got home i decided to take a look. Turns out my dad didnt take the old rubber seal off the filter holder on the motor and the new oil i had put in blew out of the filter that was already on there and went everywhere (all underneath on the diff, exhaust, tranny- EVERYWHERE). When i got home i had about 1/2 a quart of oil left in the motor. I was so pissed so i went down and bought 5 more quarts of oil (in an attempt to save the ticking motor) along with a V6 Formula Engine Restorer (comes in a can). I drained the remaining oil, topped up the motor again and took the rubber seal from the oil filter off the motor. Started it up oil started running through and the valve ticking didn't go away all of a sudden, just quieted down a bit. I drove it down my street and sure enough the ticking has stopped and has run like a champ ever since.

Thought i'd let you guys read this little **** up I did, and let it be a good reminder to always take the old seal off the motor before you put a filter on, or you'll end up with a siezed up motor LOL.

Been there, Done that. I had to replace the lifters in a 351M\400 I had quite a few years ago because of that.:annoyed:

I've done that. Luckily I caught it pretty much as soon as I started the truck up, so it didn't do any damage. (Made a hell of a mess though. :annoyed:)That's why you always check for leaks as soon as you start it!

ive done that. it was an old exploder at work. started it up and checked for leaks, but when i started to back it out, oil went everywhere. still have a stain in the parking lot. lol. now i always wipe the mating surface with a rag just to be safe. the exploder is ok btw, as soon as i saw the line of oil in front of me i pulle back in and shut it off. only lost about 1 quart. still scary as hell. almost lost my job cuz of it

+10 , i think everyones been there at least once. good learning experience though as to why you check leaks. glad ya didn't bag it though:icon_cheers:

Did that on my old '94 and it held for a week before any oil started leaking. Drove it about 2-300 miles that week too.

ive heard of guys doing this before, i always check my old filter for the o-ring. if its there, its not still on the engine.

A guy a work did this like three times. Then by the fourth time when we pulled the mustang back in the garage and took off three, yes 3 gaskets that was his last day.

How the hell do you triple gasket????? :icon_confused::icon_confused:

I always check the old filter for the gasket, and the block, then wipe the block, and so far I haven't had any problems.

Reading this reminds me of when I used to work at a shop a few years back. Some kid who didn't know much was doing an oil change and skipped the putting the drain plug back in part..... and didn't realize it until he had dumped 20 quarts on the floor.. Yeah it musta had one o' them large sized oil pans, right?
