Clocking a BW1356

For sure open it up. :icon_thumby:

The newest one is 10 years old, why chance pulling the engine back out because you cheaped out and didn't change the $15 pan gasket? Does dropping the trans back out for the $20 rear main seal sound fun?

Or you could be like me and stuck with a ping and an uneasy feeling you will have to pull the heads in the truck as opposed to on a stand when I already had the timing cover and intake off with no exhaust to deal with.

I just put in a stock replacement oil pump and it does fine, runs 70lbs cold and about 50 warmed up. I also changed the driveshaft and pickup too.

If nothing else you will have an idea if the engine is even worth messing with.

I just like a High Volume oil pump. It doesnt give increased pressure, it give a 28% increase in oil to everything. My dad had one on his 2.8 and I have one on my 2.8. After putting the HV one on mine, it ran alot smoother and quieter and the infamous 2.8 tick on mine got quieter telling me it was getting more oil to the top end. Basiclly I aviod having to use oil thickeners and whatnot and that saves me money over time.

NP 208 has a rear slip yoke style driveshaft FYI and there are no known SYE kits available..

dude they can be had with fixed yokes.

thats why there isnt a kit. it can be done with oem parts.... all of my 208's are fixed yoke whether ford or jeep.

glo has a clocking ring available.

heres a jeep 208 in my rig at one point

So are the jeep 208 and ford 208 the same other then the jeep one just needing to be clocked. And do ford 208's have yokes on them or just jeep ones and if so know the years are the ford ones that have yokes?

all the fullsize broncos have 208s with a fixed yoke.

matt

You mean all FS Bronco 208s have fixed yokes. :D

Same goes for the 13-56 in the later broncos, all fixed yokes.

Im avoiding the BW1356 all together. If i can find a FS broncho with a manual tranny and the 208 then I will go that route, or at least find a 4 or 5 speed tranny and hook the 208 to it. As long as it is a fixed yoke Im good.

Well my local JY wants 350 for an engine. Now the ones that can be roller or are tapped for them have been sitting awhile and I have no clue if they run or not. Now The 85 one out of the f150 is known to run and not have any problems, its there due to a side impact collision.

What upgrades can be done to a flat tappet 302 engine that will get me out of the typical 150 hp range? It currently has a 2 barrel intake on it and I have been looking up 4 barrel ones but there are so many choices and not much info on them performance wise. I also want to get a nice street cam too.

In the '80's they have a really weak cam and next to no compression new. On the plus side you can get almost three flat tappet cams for the price of one roller.

It is going to need different heads to up the compression. E7's are cheap, common and better than most. I picked up a set for my shelved '78 for something like $75.

I like my Weiand Stealth intake, very punchy down low and pulls good at higher revs too. Pretty darn economical to buy too.

On the transmission front this might interest you...

Does anybody know of a flat tapet cam that would put out more that will still be find with a stock engine. Plans with the truck is street driving and trail driving/mudding.

I might be able to talk them into giving me the engine, tranny (auto) and transfercase all for 400 if Im good enough. I have known them for years so hopefully they will cut me a deal.

As I read on websites such a edlebrock and comp cams that 85 could have roller cams in them. So its kinda hard to tell if the 85 engine I may be getting has it so I guess I will have to wait until I get it in my hands to truly see what all it has.

I will say the prices of a mild cam arent bad.

Probably not a roller if it is the original engine.

Trucks didn't get rollers until well into the 90's. They were set up for them significantly earlier but not that early.

I was going to get a towing/rv cam back when I was looking to go through a flat tappet engine.
