i own a 1994 ford ranger 4.0 ohv with the m5od manual transmission, i was looking around the engine bay the other day and theres a plug right above where the bell housing connects to the back of the engine, i cant find the wire that connects to it anywhere, what would that plug be? and would anyone be able to tell me where the wire originated from, any help is appreciated, thank you

That sounds like the location of the o2 sensor connector. Is it a round 4 wire connector?

yep I second that!
You should have an o2 sensor right before your y pipe connects to your cat.

It is probably not used.
There is a connection there for trucks with automatics, for neutral safety switch(NSS) I believe, trans must be in Park or Neutral for starter to activate.
Manuals use a Clutch pedal IN safety switch.

There should be a cap on it, must have come off.

thank you very much RonD, and to Senornoob and Fordranger1991 i have my o2 sensors connected already, the engine i have in it was swapped from a 1995 automatic ford explorer so that makes sense the help is always appreciated thanks everyone
