clicking in the front end???? an a check engine light question?

hey guys ive noticed if i go over anything other than a paved rd i have some clicking going on in the front end.... its getting REALLY annoying.. i took a quick peak an coudnt find anything outta the ordinary.. my buddie suggested it might be an abs sensor thats really close?? its a 95 4x4 4.0 it has warn manual hubs so i know it cant be the crappy auto hubs..lol

Check engine light problem.. 2 nights ago i was driving home from work an the light came on.. well i pop the hood an had a listen an it sounded like a vacuum leak an it was.. the lil red line that goes from the grommet on the intake to the vacuum ball had broken at the grommet. no biggie i pull off the broken piece an push the line back into the hole.. i disconnected the battery for about 20 min light stayed off.. between then an now ive done 45 miles an the light came back on.. i went back to autozone an had them plug it in an it had the same code excessive erg air flow.. p1041 or something along that line.. i was telling the guy i had it plugged in 2 days ago for the check engine light an the guys like you cant disconnect your battery to get rid of the light you have to erase the code with the scanner tool.. so he erased the code with the tool... so far its been alright but ive only done like 13 miles.. does this sound right to every one ?? you cant disconnect your battery to get rid of the code? :icon_confused:

try to disconnect the battery for 30 secs and mash on the brake pedal at the same time.

First to tackle the clicking noise. Does the truck have a sway bar? If so those links will make a pretty loud click. If you grab a hold of them and try and move them they will feel solid but thats just because it is under a load. If they look old I would replace them. It can't hurt and the MOOG kit is less than $20 bucks. Other than that it could be a loose caliper? or a loose shock.

As for the check engine light: The light came back on because there is still something wrong. The guy at autozone may have erased the code so that the light isn't on anymore but the problem is still there. You might be okay for a while but sooner or later that light is going to come back on. Not to mention that most of the guys at AZ can't tell their asses from their elbows. Go to NAPA or someplace else that's reputable and stay away from the ZONE.

I didn't make it clear about the sway bar links.. You don't have to replace the whole link, just the bushings. I just did !mine over and my truck is as quite as a caddilac

so you think its my sway bar... if i disconnect it the clicking should go away correct?

If it's random clicking, anything loose up front can do it. Like a shock absorber, the sway bars, a radius arm bushing or two, even a tie rod end (though you would feel that in the steering).

If it's clicking like a ratchet, something has to be turning or contacting. Maybe something contacting the rotor (like an ABS sensor or a rock), maybe a thrashed wheel bearing (though it would probably make other noises first), or maybe a trashed front U-joint. I presume you're in 4WD.

actually no makg it does it in 2wd also.. thats why i didnt think it was the hubs...

The first thing I'd try is to open the driver's side window, grab the truck by the door frame, and shake the bejeezus out of it, to see if you can reproduce the noise.

If the sway bar is at issue, this will trip it. Then you can get a buddy to do the shaking and see where the motion is.

If you disconnect the sway bar the noise should [I stop. However, if they have been on there for a while they can be a sonofagun to get off. Like MAKG said get someone to shake the truck for you and try and eliminate everything else first.

Good Luck! Let us know how you made out.

Makg your a smart man.. glad to have you part of trs ..lol i just shook my truck an its clicking.... so looks like its down to the sway bar... think it could just be loose?

nah those get kinda beat after a while and alot of times the bolt that holds it together snaps when you try to loosen or tighten it. Mine had broken off on one side but i get alot of salt in the winter roads up here . if it is just disconnected it will make a bang when its struck by the control arm while driving so its something you gotta replace. its not hard tho. I used a big piece of pipe to put leverage on the second side so it would go together easier

well i replaced the front pig an had to disconnect the sway bar.. well we put a 3/8 bolt in an its supposed to have a 1/2.. so i replaced the bolt with 1/2 an its good to go..

now about my damn check engine light.. i went all weekend first time it came on at 48 miles.. went 160 this weekend with no check engine light on. mind you i wasnt easy on the truck this weekend went wheeling ALL weekend... then on my way home it came back on.... idk wtf the problem is.. it all started when one of the vacuum lines broke.. so i replaced ALL the lines this time.. my buddy had a spare set of lines from a 4.0.. so i disconnected the battery this time for a good 20-30 minutes while i was changing all the lines.. fired the truck back up no check engine light for now.. so i hope this does the trick.. ...
