I have no problem, just posting this in hoping it will help someone.
I had been getting a solid 17mpg, 87 octane, 50/50 highway/city driving in my 94 4.0l 5sp 4x4 with 31x10.5, 3.73gears I had been reading a lot about a pinging problem that I was having underlaod/freeway driving under acceleration. I checked for vacuum leaks; none. I changed the fuel filter, and cleaned the MAF (it looked like someone swept a dirty floor with it). I thought my truck ran really well, and had a lot of power. After my repairs, it is like I shoved a 5.0 in it.:icon_thumby: It starts easier/faster, idles a little smoother....All of this was at a 20 dollar expense for the cleaner and filter. I will post an updated mpg later.....oh ya, no more pinging.

I did the same thing... except had a small vacuum leak (drop of flexible glue fixed that). I think my knock at higher rpm under load is from the head gaskets. I can see the leak spots on the block. The motor runs great otherwise, and doesn't seem to leak into the cylinders, just out of the block, which is GREAT as far as a headgasket could fail.

Will have to agree that the MAF and fuel filter makes a giant difference. One time I ran it down to about 1/8-3/16 tank... haha. I don't go below 3/8 now or I have to put a new filter in. My MAF previously looked brownish...

Had a bad water temp sensor... that cut down a good portion of the high rpm/load knock.

A can of MAF cleaner and a the T15h driver should be inside every RBV, or at least in the owner's tool box.

Especially if taken off-road.

I just cleaned my MAF a couple weeks ago and it was like I just did a tuneup on it. It runs really smooth now.
