Classic Chambered Powerstick

not bad on the vette but i wont lie it looks like a giant glasspack to me. the problem w/ running such a thing is it can be classified as a glasspack and not a true muffler which will fail your inspection. the next problem is that muffler was designed to go on something w/ open headers hence pre 70s vehicles w/ well tuned carbs, hence never pass new model emissions. how much do they run? (can you get glasspacks for cheaper?) besides these issues if you have an offroad trk your driving and want a def unique sound w/o cost being a factor i say go for it and post vids later, but on a v6 or 4 cyl engine im afraid the end result will be a pile of rice that will feed half of china. egg drop soup and wonton anyone?

No problem with inspections. I know well what they sound like on Corvettes. There were a number of them in the late 60's (yeh, I'm an old fart). I love the sound of chambered pipe. Although it looks like a glasspack there is no packing. My major concern is noise. I want something a bit louder than stock with NO incabin drone. I had a car many years ago with bad muffler placement that sounded great outside, but the interior drone was maddening. That is the main reason Flowmaster is out. I like the concept of chambered pipe exhaust, and have found examples for lots of makes and models, but no Rangers. My next choice would be a Dynomax Super Turbo.

resonation in rangers is def an issue, those pipes will resonate like hell i can see that one coming. if you want good sound w/o the resonation (i havent seen it done but considered doing it myself a long time ago and did it w/ fart cans) i had 2 fart cans in front of the axle, def lots of cab noise, moved them over the axle and the resonation went away but still had the good note/rumble. my suggestion is move your spare tire (if you havent already) and put the flowmaster/magnaflow/thrush turbo muffler etc on the other side of the axle and mount them either to or in the spare tire rack area, this way you have short tips but the mufflers are after the axle and no in cab resonation.

well this is a prime example of a full mod race engine w/ either stock mufflers choking it or tuned mufflers and a good fuel tune at work. this engine however was originally tuned for open headers as you can see but is retuned to fit the mufflers from this information. i honestly want to see the dyno sheets b4 i believe these numbers tho.

louverred type glass packs like that one there are actually more restrictive that your classic perferated tube type like your cherry bombs but they have better sound.

well to be honest looking at them and how cheap they are i think i may try one of the 40 inch vettepack 2 1/4 in 2 1/4 out on my 92 2.3 for shits and giggles. i have plenty of room between the tranny and axle for it to go then just do a strait rear dump w/ a 2 1/2 x 8 inch tip on it. for a lil more than a flowmaster i think ill give it a wack.

rurouni20xx,

If you do, let me know what you think about them. I had a 98 2.5 Ranger and wondered about how a Powerstick would sound. My main thing is I don't want a lot of interior noise and NO drone. My main choices are the Powerstick and the Dynomax Super Tubo.

gladly, my trk is catless however (was when i bought it and i noticed some blue smoke no sense in installing one and stopping it up in a few months) and i will have some in cab resonation, but being that mine is an extended cab i have more than 40 inches of room to put it b4 the axle. if your really worried about resonation i suggest a shorter muffler thats quiet as close to the axle as possible and goes over the axle, this is experience talking. im going w/ the longer 40" vette pipe (since its only 135 bux and really long so it should have wonderful sound deadening properties) and mounting it close to the dump over. i can almost tell you i will have resonation since i dont have a cat, but its better than the current exhaust leak that i hear thru my floorboard thats driving me nutz. i dont really like popping in the floorboard area when i downshift to slow down, my valves must be loving it.

Here is a link to one of the Tundra boards with sound clips. http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/tundra/127792-true-chambered-dual/

There are a lot of sound clips on various boards. All the comments are NO drone at any speed. You can hear the exhaust but there is none of the resonance that seems to be common with the Flowmaster 40's. That's one of the things that makes these attractive to me.

I have had a v6 (long time ago) with true duels and turbo mufflers. Sounded really good. It was a 1976 Mercury Capri (German made) with the 2.8L V6 which was the ancestor of the 2.9L in the Rangers. With that setup it never sounded ricy. I like the idea of the 40 inch Vette pack. With a standard cab I just don't have the room. I am thinking about the 30 inch and adding a resonator behind the axle if needed.

im familiar w/ the cologne 2.8 2.9 and 4.0 being related, damn tuff engines. im having probs w/ the engine as we speak but ill def be ordering the muffler to help get my exhaust prob fixed asap. trying to fig out ignition/fuel system problem now, but i know the exh isnt helping any to say the least.

k guys finally got the money to order the damn thing (every time i turn around i have to spend money on other shiznit and its pissin me off!!!) have it in my trk hopefully will have it installed this wknd and reply w/ the news of how she sounds. first impression: holy crap this thing is as wide as my backseat!!!

Finally installed it last week, real quiet until i get on it then everybody hates me, broke in over the weekend and isnt bad. it has a rap around 2k, but down the hwy its a nice deep tone, decel pop is horrible tho. if i mash in the clutch i dont have any but if it let it ride in gear and decel it pops like crazy. i have no cats and its 2 1/4 the whole way and thats prob why but overall i like it. heres the amazing part...NO INTERIOR NOISE! its all out the back and you can hear it behind you. to keep the coppers off my back (havent been pulled over but not going to give them the chance) and to reduce the popping im going to take the super 44 off my other trk and mount it on the other side of the axle as a form of resonator, that should do the trick.

just an update, ive had this muffler on the trk for a while, i had a vx 40 series copy installed (they use the same part numbers as flowmaster even and the muffler was 40 bux at the shop versus 90 for the flow...) and i am enjoying it, knocked down the note to where even the cops dont mess with me at wide open throttle. here are some pics for the hungry ppl:
