in my 98 ranger xlt, which I just picked the truck from the dealer 2 saturdays ago(and no they wont fix it). I put a new lighter in, (after I pushed the org. one right through). So I plugged the wires in and it keeps popping the fuse. It pops the fuse even if the cigarette lighter is not pushed in, or the key is not turned. I pulled the fuse housing out and i cant see if there is a wire bare bc there is a big cluster f#%k of wires, tape, etc... Can I run a straight wire from battery w/ a fuse and grnd off the lighter? just to make it easier. This is just driving me nuts.

i wouldnt see y not. i mean as long as u have a fuse then u wont hurt anything but the fuse. i would test it out before install to make sure. if that doesnt work im sure u can find a nice bic to put in that cig lighter and ull be all set lol

I ran mine straight to the fuse panel and plugged it into the one for the lighter...works great...make sure you're grounding the lighter properly...it should be grounded by the screws that hold it to the dash...otherwise...follow the wire just to make sure...

I don't see why you couldn't run another wire. I did it on my wife's Honda CR-V beacuse they only work with the key on from the factory. Works like a charm.
