chugging and cutting out?

hey, i got a 2002 ranger xlt 4wd recently, its a 4.0 5 speed, and is lifted on 35s, it has a problem with chugging through all of the gears, even in 1st, itll get up in rpm and keep climbing but chug all the way through, and it also goes from 1000rpm to 500rpm and back sometimes when i am stopped, any ideas? clutch? new plugs and wires? i need help!

Do a compression check first. It don't cost anything cept time! Then you will know to start with stock wires/plugs and whatever elsse it might need.
Without a compression check you are shooting in the dark.

the wierd thing is that it only does it somtimes, i just drove it with no chugging or cutting out what so ever, i will do a compression test, the motor only has 110,000 original miles on it

Then forget about the compression check.. If it is intermitent it is not low compression..

thank you powerranger262, i will do that asap, it also needs a new o2 sensor, its the bank one sensor one, so its the upstream, could that have any effect on the truck? and would if benefit from new plugs, wires, and coil pack?

From my experience, anytime an 02 sensor is throwing a code, it will be affecting the way your truck operates. So that should be replaced. As for the plugs and wires, 110,000 miles on them, if they are original, is due for new ones. DO NOT go with the fancy three pronged, splitfire, "high performance" plugs. Just get the original MOTORCRAFT plugs that came out of it and gap them to factory. Trust me, I even put the stock replacement autolite double platinums in and they were junk, and have now switched them back to motorcrafts.

What powerranger said times two!!! Get the stock stuff and be happy for over 100K! But don't replace them until they cause spitting and sputtering..

thanks guys, thank yo alot, i really appreciate it, i think i might have found another reason for the problem, there is a small plastic tube that runs from the air box to the head, it runs offa the air box line that runs to the throttle body, it seems to not fit correctly and is allowing a gap on the air box end, i tried my best to make it fit and for a short while my truck didnt sputter or chug, but after a little driving, it allowed a gap and started chugging again, could this be the problem?
