Hey everyone, i am looking for some help on my 4.0 i have a chirping coming from what seems to be the back of the engine and can't seem to figure it out. i let the engine cool down and removed the belt to eliminate any pulley's or belt noise and it Seem's to still have the chirping going on and off the accelerator thought maybe it could be a camshaft synchronizer but i am not sure if the SOHC has one. Any help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated. I am a novice mechanic trying to learn how to fix my daily driver thank you.

Threw further research i do believe this motor does not have a CSS. Anyone have any info on trouble shooting this engine?

Well you know these SOHC engines have the passenger side cam driven by a chain at the rear. Can't say I've ever heard one chirp... I've heard more of a rattle.

I would try to pinpoint it with a long screw driver. If it sounds like it truly coming from the rear passenger side head... pull the cover and do some inspecting.

We consider the chain tensioners (both sides) maintenence items... about 100k lifespan.

You can also drop the lower oil pan pretty easy and inspect for nylon trash from the timing chain guides.

I should ask...

Do you hear any rattle on a cold start?
