I realize this has probably been asked a million times before but I need some suggestions.

Goals:

remove speed limiter

change/adjust shift points

remap fuel and ignition

calibrate for different ring and pinion gearing and wheel/tiresize

Also seems like there are not too many options to get rid of the damn restrictive MAF section in 4.0L intake tubes? The aftermarket MAFs like the one offered by Jet are for older models with a differnt wiring harness and an external air temp sensor. Any other options? rigged F150 MAF? harness is the same but intake tube is larger. or just use stock in a bigger tube and use a chip or piggyback thing to recalibrate?

answered my question somewhat. Found through a bit of research that SCT products are highly recommended. Namely the ones programmed at Bamachips.

Ive been eyeballing the superchips Cortex module because of price but I realize it lacks in a few areas. The thing that gets me is that all of these are EPROM flashers from what i see and understand. Which doesnt worry me but it does raise a few questions on versitility for highly modified applications.

I go back to my days when I owned a DSM car. turbocharged 4g63. most piggyback tuners were the way to go there or if you had the cash standalone systems.

Reason being is that most good piggybacks allow for a greater range of adjustments to the fuel curve without sending it off to someone to program or having preset maps thrown in by a dealer. However the drawback is no shift correction, no speed limiter correction, and no wheel tire size/gear ratio correction.

I wonder if I purchased something like the Cortex and flashed my controll module for shift points and gear/tire correction and speed limit then piggy backed an APEXI AFC neo for fine tuning the signals thrown by aftermarkt MAF and a few other additional sensors. I wonder if i could get a good result.

From my tuning experiance that route sounds like 3 years of trial and error but I doubt theres alot of other options on a ranger...

well after posting, while at work, I realized the price of doing a combination. Not sure though how it could work out. Im willing to try though if i can find the stuff at a reasonable price.

the problem I have with the SCT stuff is that they "give" you 5 chances basically to program your control unit. After those 5 are used it locks you out! WTF I dont want to spend $600 on somethign i can use 5 times. After 5 i can pay to have it unlocked? really a waste id rather play around with the piggy backs and the cheaper flasher.

Ill let you guys know how it turns out. I just ordered a lightning MAF and some other crap im gonna buy one of APEXIs' modules and a flasher and see how it goes. worst i culd do is render my truck useless.

lol "trial and error" I like. Im a scientist by education or at least as far as im educated, experiments are fun to me. Im a carpenter by trade to pay for the education, in which case "trial and error" usually leads to me getting hurt or close to it... hmmm yeah im glad i didnt try and error something today now that i think about it.

The mass airflow sensor is really not all that restrictive in that system. You best bet may be to go to an aftermarket intake system if you are looking to get a free breathing system. Those jet parts are so expensive as well. They make a data cartridge that plugs into the data port on your ecu but those are $250.

As for taking the speed limiter off.... why? I have a Ranger 4x4 and I don't dare take that truck above 80 on the highway.

If I would do anything to my truck I would gear down the rear end to a 4.10 if your running a 3.73. That will increase your power at the wheels overall.

im not totally sure, but my 98 4x4 4.0L went took me to the hospital at about 100mph,so they'll go atleast that fast. I've had my 08 fx4 to about 90 on the freeway. i dont wana go any faster honestly.:shok:

My '96 4.0 has its limiter at 109mph. Had an emergency one day and I had to get back to town fast, was about 30 miles out. The 3.08 gears might have something to do with that, though.

I will never take the Ranger anywhere near that fast on the highways anymore, its simply too dangerous. Unless its a matter of Life and Death.

Unless you plan on taking the Ranger circle track racing or something.... wouldn't bother removing it. Theres not much point in it.

get the sct xcalibrator and you will have all that you need you can also add the PRP package to the xcalibrator later for the ability to realy get in there and tune the ecu

well Ive only gone about 90 myself after that I think the driveshaft vibrations might cause my head to expload like in that movie scanners :icon_surprised:

isn't the stock drive shaft only good for something like 100 mph anyways before it blows up and splits your truck in half?

of course i knew id get that reaction to raising the limiter. Makes sense that I dont its more for options at soem point then doing it first off. My tires cant handle it my suspension cant. truck it too high to go that fast. but i have been over 100 in a ranger for a while on the interstate but is was an older one. Hell ive hit pot holes on a motorcycle going 80+ and tat wasnt fun. used to break 100 in the DSM all the time cruising out of state.

100mph isnt that fast and i dont like when they put 120 on my dash if i can only go like 89

im not 4x4 and if i was damn sure this thing would be covered in mud. but its 2wheel drive.

friend of mine has a nissan frontier that he takes to the track(drag) all the time. figure ill try and beat him. Prolly wont get over 90 even after lots of $$$ but im not gonna beat 14's at 88mph friends truck

Yah my audi limiter was at 130 which Ive done a few times then I removed it and went about 140ish a few times it drove remarkably well at insane speeds but that was on route 20 in Iowa theres no where near me now that I would feel safe driving at that kind of speed thats one reason I sold it ... but now I got the 4x4 and its usually got mud on it to the dissapointment of my wife
