OK so I have an 86 ranger that came with a 2.9 previously swapped in a 97 4.0 it's a manual of that matters. So I have some strong exhaust smell and rough to low idle (no tach). Anyways I have no check engine light on but also don't know if it is functional after the swap. Also don't know if the truck is obd1 or obd2, I thought originally it would have been 1 and after the swap should be 2? Also I can not find a diagnostic port anywhere. Not under the dash or in the engine bay. Can you tell me where the original location would be and where I might look now? Wanting to hook it up and see of there are any codes and what all my numbers are looking like. Thanks for the help in advance!

I think 86's were EEC-IV, which means you had to read codes through the flashing check engine light, but you have an 97 4.0 in there. If the EEC for the 4.0 wasn't installed with the engine, good luck. If it was, you should have and OBD port somewhere...if the swap was done right.

Unfortunately in this case the only person who can tell you how to read the codes is the person that did the swap.

However, if you can find the ECU you could determine from it OBD1 or OBD2 then either follow the wires to a connecter or splice into them right at the ecu and add the appropriate stile of connector.
