What is the correct way to check if a fan clutch is working properly??

(on a '94 Ranger 4 liter engine).

Thanks.

Fan should spin pretty freely of the motor when the engine is cold, let the engine warm up and turn off, fan should barely spin at all in comparison to the now stationary water pump pully

old school......

warm the engine up good......take a piece of cardboard box about 1' long and wide....fold it in half.....slowly stick it against the fan blades at idle....if the fan quits turning---the clutch id bad.....it it barely turns---the clutch is going bad
