Without pulling codes you are trying to find a needle in a haystack. If your check engine light is on it could be numerous things. You need to pull codes to find out what the problem is. If you don't you are just going to be guessing and spending money on parts that you don't need.
The light doesn't automatically point to the emission control,
If you already pulled the codes, and got an emission control code,
Take the code to autozone and have them look it up in their computer.
