check engine light

I'm sorry if there is a thread about this already but the search function is not working for me
I just bought a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT with 78000 miles on it. It seems to run great, clutch seems strong, no random or weird noises, but I have two problems. This morning my check engine light came on (could it be cause it's chilly) and my ABS brake light is on? I'm not a mechanic but I'm trying to learn how to work on this vehicle b/c I dont have the money to spend everytime something like this happens. So my question is...any suggestions?

Take it up to the part store and have them pull the codes or maybe they need to be reset (timers) someone here should know.
