check engine light comes on sometimes

i have a '89 super cab with a 2.9l v-6, sometimes my check engine light comes on when my truck is idlling, but when i give it gas it goes out. every now and then it dies out if i'm at a stop light or slowing down to a stop. any suggestions?

id suggest pulling the codes to see why the check engine light comes on.

theres a reason its called "on board diagnostics".

+1, check out ECC-IV diagnotics in the technical library.

You want to pull the stored memory codes, but this happens right after KOEO. You'll want to run KOEO, it will blink once, then start blinking out codes in stored memory.

there is a spendy piece of equipment that works excellent for pulling codes on an 89 I have included a pic to help you find one should you ever really need one...

IAC. Clean it and reset the PCM.

the IAC will only trip a check engine light if the circuit goes open...in which case cleaning it will not help.

theres NO WAY of knowing for sure without pulling the codes and seeing what the computer is seeing. details on doing this in the tech library.
