Check engine light always on

MY check engine light is always on ever since i replaced the battery even with the key out of the ignition its always on what does this mean. how i can i fix it.

If...you can't get the engine started...then yes, the CEL will stay on.

or, have you in the resent past had it running, (after the battery replacement), and the CEL stays on?

you can still get codes without the engine running, KOEO, they will just be stored codes.

I'd look over the battery cables VERY closely, making sure that they are not corroded and the ground is making good contact on the frame & to the engine. & perhaps you over looked a small wire and didn't get it reattached during the new battery reinstall?

When i replaced the battery i replaced both cables as they were so corroded but i did just find what looks like a fusible link but i don't think it is I'm going to try and get a new one and see what happens it wasn't connected and is all corroded.
