CHECK ENGINE error codes

Hi all,

The check engine light is on in my 2002 Ranger. A local parts store read the codes and they came up as 'PO 171B, bank 1 too lean' and "PO 174B, bank 2 too lean." The garage wants $75/hour to investigate the problem so I think I'll try to track it down myself first. They did clue me in that it could be a fuel pump getting weak or vacuum line problems.

I have read some of the old forum discussions at TRS on this error code and everyone is suggesting looking for vacuum leaks and cleaning the MAF sensor. I will check that out but I was wondering if anyone has heard that the fuel pump could be going bad? My ranger does have 97.000+ miles!

I don't have a lot of time to work on this so I am looking for the most likely cause first. I would appreciate any guidance you can give me.

Thanks,
M.D.
