My check engine light came on. When I had it checked the code said something about the door handle. I didn't think to write the code down. Anyone have experience with this - know what it could be?

No, no it didn't. You are 110% wrong. I am really not trying to be mean or rude or offensive, or the 100 other things I am routinely accused of being by people who don't know me well and can't hear the inflection because we are communicating through text, not speech.

There are no check engine codes pertaining to door handles. Go get the codes read again, write them down this time, and bring us something in the format of PXXXX.

Agree with ADMS. the engine management system on your truck could care less if the doors are even on the truck. Do pull the codes, they will let you know where to start looking if the CEL is on.

However, if you are getting a "door ajar" indicator on the dash with the door fully closed, there is a switch in the door latch mechanism that frequently goes bad. sometimes you can fix it by spraying some WD-40 or silicone lube into the door latch mechanism.

but the door ajar issue will not set any codes... it just keeps the door ajar light lit and the chime will go off when you close the door and put the truck into gear to let you know that the door is not closed.

And welcome to TRS.

Thanks guys, it didn't seem possible to me either which is why I posted the question here. I had it checked at NAPA and watched him look it up in the book. He even said he had never heard of such a thing. He must have read it wrong out of the book. My temp gauge is not working and I expected it to be related to that. No door ajar lights on. Thanks for the welcome. And I will get someone to get the code again and see if it sounds anything like "door handle". Adsm08, I didn't find you rude I could hear the humor in your first four words and picture you shaking your head in disbelief.

It's more than just that, but yes, understanding that goes a long way. I have a very sarcastic personality, but it's hard to get that to come across on the internet, which is where I do most of my interpersonal interactions. I use sarcasm as a tool to try and get people to think critically about things. I have found most people will realize they know the answers to their own questions if the question is rephrased to them in the correct manner.

Where is a sarcasm font when you need it....

Yes, we need a good "tongue in cheek" icon :)

Sometimes people know the answer but don't like so look for others.

Or like with me, I ask about things I think I know but am not confident about so seek others input.

Anyways, never felt you were mean, patronizing or anything other than knowledgeable, experienced and helpful.

I had it checked again. The code is P1443 but this guy didn't have a book to look it up with. I looked the code up online and it said that the code was "Evaporative Emission Control System Control Valve". Two of the hoses in this line are pretty bad, so I will start there.

way too common of an issue with the pre 1998s. Start with the hose on the engine side all the way to the sensor, then the hose from the sensor to the valve, then the hose back to the charcoal canister mounted on the inner frame rail. If any hoses need replacing do so and reset the light. If it trips again replce the purge valve (cylinder looking thing) and that should be as far as youll have to go.

The valve only flows one way so make sure if you replace it its in the proper position.

The sensor or just a leak in the lines would throw different codes. P1443 is most always the hose leading to or the purge valve itself.
