On my '97, from time to time on start-up, I get a loud clicking noise for a second or two. It only click 4-5 times and it seems pretty random. I only drive it to and from work. This means that it sits for 14 hours over night, and 10 hours during shifts. Either way, for lifter chatter, I would think that both time intervals would be long enough for the oil to drain out, and the click to happen all of the time.

To me, it sounds like it is coming from the starter area. It is quite loud, as I can hear it over the radio w/ the windows closed. When I say that it seems random, I mean that it is not a consistent time interval. Because of this, I can imagine that it could be something motor related... I would think that it is going to be a consistent sound if that was the case.

That being said, I am no mechanic and am just a DIY guy looking to learn more. Any help would be appreciated.

That is what I was guessing (As far as new starter). Is there any damage that it will do if I let it go? I am considering driving my '98 for winter, so then I can tackle what I want on the '97.

eventually the starter will strip and wont do anything other then spin. could damage the flywheel depending on if the teeth are metal or plastic.. if plastic, they will just strip out after a while.

'06, Thanks for your help. I'll probably just start driving the '98 as my daily for the time being. I don't particularly want to screw up the flywheel.....

Make sure the starter bolts are tight.

Remove starter, inspect flywheel for chipped gear teeth (turn engine using the crank bolt in the operating direction so you can see all the teeth). Take starter to auto parts store for free testing. If it tests good, lubricate the shaft that the starter gear slides on, then reinstall it.

If all the flywheel teeth were good (doubtful from your description) replace the starter.

Chipped flywheel teeth means remove transmission to replace it, ~$80 for a new one.
