I am more than ecstatic to find my filter change was too easy...

I tried to follow the haynes manual at first and I think it refers to an older model or something, because my 2006 is different.

I attempted removing the fuel lines with fancy tools and devices, I nearly reached the point to tear apart the plastic, then i cooled myself down and went researching.

I found a ford mech at the local Advance Auto and he told me I was overthinking it...

Push the green (or orange) tab in and pull the line out...,. whalla!

I'm only posting this as advice to anyone who may be confused. Not every fuel filter setup must be the same apparently, but for 2006 models it is quite easy. If anyone could shed light on what year models have the certain setups it would prob be a great addition to the Tech page.

My personal step by step:

1 Get some protective equipment, gloves and safety glasses. Be prepared for a little bit of fuel to drip out.

2 Release the pressure from the schrader valve located in the engine compartment on the fuel line rail above the left side cylinders. Place a towel over the valve as you compress the internal spring (it's just like a tire valve) to prevent getting sprayed in the face with fuel.

3 Go to the passenger foot well and look under the glove box, you'll see a little box with a gasoline symbol on it. Push in the red button on the top of it (at least this is what I did, couldnt get the connector removed from it).

4 Jack up the front of the car if possible, if you cant do this be careful when u remove the rear fuel connections at the filter, as you remove them face them upwards so they won't dribble fuel on your face.

5 Grab the gloves and safety goggles, get under the driver's side door and look at the fuel filter. Push the green or orange tab (in a squeezing motion) and pull the line from the filter. Do so on each connector.

6 Now gently remove the fuel filter from its bracket, no tools are necessary to get it out.

7 Push the new fuel filter into the bracket

8 Attach each connector to the filter by simply pushing them on until they "snap" in place and attain positive engagement.

9 Now go to the red button at the passenger foot well once more and push it in to reset the switch.

10 Start the engine, if it hesitates, try pressing the red button down once more.

11 Drive away with the good feeling of having a clean fuel system.

i noticed that on my 2001, on side you have to pull a clip out and the other 2 you press down.. went nuts the 1st 2 times changing it but now i remember and it makes it soo much easier haha. i was ready to rip the mother F'er apart initially until i figured it out, it was such an annoying event i made it a purpose to remember for the next encounter. and of course i released the fuel pressure so i could take a minimum amount of gas bath.

I used the fuel line disconnect tool on my 06 and didn't have any problems.

hey airmaster and squidbilly, can you guys both post the month and year of manufacture of your trucks? i'm curious if it was a late model change or something... possibly made at a different plant?

on my 99 I need the 5/16" disconnect tool ($10)......I have changed it twice so far. the last time I timed myself. I had the tool in my hand when I started. it took 8 minutes and that included pulling the relay and relieving the pressure. it is not a bad idea to hit it with some liquid wrench before hand..

Hey Weezl, sorry I didnt see that but my year is 2006 and i think its march but I have to double check my manufacture date, Im away from my truck at the moment

I nearly drove myself nuts today messing with the fuel filter on my 2001. The engine side I was familiar with from working on my 89 Ranger. The rear two lines, I tried everything I could think of. I was using the plastic removal tools with no luck. I was thinking that maybe the orange and green clips had to be pushed in but didn't try it. Now that I've seen other trucks have these color-coded clips, I've got high hoped for tomorrow.

Thanks for posting this OP. :headbang:

GB :)

pretty sure those orange and green clips get pulled out
