My new shocks will be here Thursday (2 weeks and a day after ordering them). Ive read somewhere that you shouldn't compress your shocks by hand when installing them and was wondering why that is. Would the best way to do it be jacking up the truck so the suspension is at full droop and then take off the old and on with the new?

thats wrong, you're supposed to compress them and let them expand again a few times to "bleed" them.

i wouldn't do it with the suspension fully extended just because the suspension can usually hang down lower than the shocks can extend

Compress them a few times by hand, but not all the way down or all the way back out... and yes you can compress them by hand to install them otherwise you would miss the bolt hole and have to throw out your old shock. Not to mention your truck will be able to do way worse to the shock then you can...

I was always told you need to compress them a few times. Any shocks I have purchased have always come with bands to compress them during shipment. I took off the bands and then pushed up and down on them a few times and then installed them.
