changing out key cylinder?

I know at the dealership i work at, the parts guys can cut a key from just the vin on some years, but i dont know how far back it goes, still worth a try to me.

if your truck is new enough call the dealer and talk to the parts dept give them your vin and you have to show proof of ownership and they might be able to cut a key for around $50. might be worth a try

For the 2001 model a dealership in Mesa AZ wanted to charge me $75.00 for the key.

I just bought a 97 ranger without keys. I took out the door lock and took it down to the locksmith. He made three different keys all which would open the door but said there were three different codes for the ignition. So I tried all three and one worked.

ya, i dont know why u all thyink its a big deal to remove the lock cylinder without the key, it takes about 1 min of drilling and u can pull it right out, all u have todo is drill out the pin that holds it in the column, its less the 1/4" that u have to drill, takeas about 10 mins todo and costs about 15, and the door looks the longest part on those is taken the door panels off, then u just slide out the retainer, disconnect it and undo the nut from the backside and it comes right out, about 10 mins perdoor and there about 15 bucks a piece, all in all if its a older truck, and there are keys floatin around somewhere for it, this is what i would do, that way some spitefull person that has a key somewhere doesnt take the truck or some shit...

I lost my keys and had to call a locksmith, it was no big deal I watched the whole thing. He brought over some key blanks and put on in the ignition the with some force and a lot of wiggleing he took the key out and "read" it. Then he took a triangular file and soon enough after a few tries I had my new key! it oly cost me about $75.00

Can you still drill out the pin if the ignition is not in the start position?

It's the ON position, and yes. You HAVE to drill the pin if you don't have the key (or locksmith skills) If you have the key, you can just turn it to the on position, push the pin, and the cylinder will slide right out.

My ignition is stuck in the off position though so I cant turn it to ON. The key still goes in though.

I think this is the cheapest and easiest way. $50 and the cost of a key blank. It would be a no brainer to me.

When I bought my truck, I olny got 1 key with it.

Knowing me, NOT a good idea.

I went to Ford, and I got another key made, it was expensive!

It was like 135bucks! I guess the newer trucks have microchips in the keys that need to be programed. Idk.

if you have a pre-PATS ranger, you can get an aftermarket cylinder from an autopart store for around 15bucks, but that wont solve your door keys either

also to change out the cylinder, you have to have it in the RUN position, or it wont come out, which im in the same boat with the 86 b2 i just picked up

take it to a ford dealer... they have lock picks for fords... they'll pull it for a one hour fee I would suspect.

The cheapest and easiest way is to call AAA and tell them your lost your key and theyll come make and program your new key for free and you still have 3 service calls left for the year ;)

If I loaned my truck to a friend or relative (literally anyone but my mother)
and they lost the key my foot would have to be surgically removed from
their ass.

And that takes into account I have atleast five sets of spares.

Why would I be so annoyed even though I have spares?

I would not be able to tolerate an unaccounted for set of keys and
would have to replace ALL my lock cylinders, including the glovebox lock
and that one is especially a PITA to remove and replace.

Drilling the ignition cylinder doesn't require anything particularly
special in drill bits to drill it out.
