I'm changing the ring and pinion in my 8.8 and I need to know what else I need to replace? I think I need the master overhaul kit...with the bearings, shims, crush sleeve, and pinion nut? And I need a notched cross-pin? Do I need to replace the axle bearings and seals? (at the wheels)

Do not use a notched cross pin. What gear ration are you going to?

If the bearings are good and the shaft surfaces are nice a smooth without pitting I wouldn't change them. I would change the seals while the shafts are out tho.

I'm either going 4.88 or 5.13. So I won't need a notched cross-pin?

No, do not use one. Simply a matter of a tiny bit of light grinding on the ring gear tooth to get the full pin (which is MUCH stronger) to clear and fit properly. The bit of grinding does not effect the gears at all as it is in a non contact area of the tooth.

I would also get a crush sleeve eliminator while I was at it.

I'm having someone else set it up and I want to make sure to order everything at the same time and have it put together at once. I don't want to take everything back apart for something small.

So, my order list is...

-5.13 Yukon ring and pinion set
-Gear install kit
-Axle seals
-Crush Sleeve eliminator kit

Thats it? lol

That should be it (the installation kit should have all the setup shims, bearings (if master kit), new ring gear bolts, pinion nut, gear-pattern grease, etc.).

I have 5.13 gears and a full-round crosspin in my 8.8".
As said, a very small bit of grinding at the very tips on one or two ring teeth will let you slide the much stronger solid pin in there (grind only as little as needed). Just be sure to clean up afterward though (what I did was hold my shop vac hose right against where I was grinding using a Dremel to suck the debris away as I was grinding).

One note on the grinding thing that I encountered... if you're using a newer carrier (31 spline Explorer) with the larger cross pin, you will be required to remove a little more material than that of a carrier using the smaller diameter cross pin. It still works 100%.. but as I said, you will be required to remove a bit more.

Thanks guys! I ordered the parts and I am waiting for the bearings and crush sleeve eliminator to arrive. A pic of my yukon 5.13 gear set!
