Changing emissions?

My BII is an 87 Eddie Bauer. It had California emissions with the EGR. I put a different 2.9 and an FM146 in it. I didn't use the "EGR" manifold. I've removed the egr.

I'm going to be using a computer from an 89BII.

Has anyone else eliminated the EGR by going to the newer computer?

I've noticed a difference in the wiring from the 87 to 89. I have some type of a sensor next to the solenoid that has two vacuum hoses attached to it. What is this? The 89's don't have it. There's also a different air filter box style between the two years. I'm switching air filter boxes tomorrow. The 87 that I have has some type of emissions equipment under the box, also with two vacuum hoses.

If I change the vacuum lines do I also need to change any of the wiring?

The device next to the starter solenoid is a vacuum switch for the EGR and under the air filter box is a vacuum reservoir for the EGR. Neither is needed when EGR is eliminated

Yes, you can eliminate the EGR by using a computer that didn't have EGR option.

EGR system is there to cool cylinders when engine is under load, this cooling lowers NOX emissions, and it also reduces the chance of pinging/knocking on regular gas(87 octane).

Computer for non-EGR engines have a less aggressive spark advance, to keep pinging on regular gas less likely, this can mean slightly less power, but better than pinging.

If you need to pass smog and have to pass a visual inspection you will need the vacume diagram for the anal retentive inspector. Around here you can upgrade to a newer type system never older.

In California, they go by the year of the vehicle for the emissions. The visual inspection will probably include looking for the EGR system if it had it that year. Yes, you can upgrade to a newer engine but getting it to pass emissions will probably be more involved than just going to a standard smog check station.

You want the computer and harness for that engine tranny combo with all the inputs in place and working.
