The plastic arm on the original tailgate handle broke. I'd like to switch to a metal arm that will last a little longer than the two years I got out of the original. I did a quick look online but didn't find any metal tailgate handles for my 2007 Ranger.

Are most of the handles interchangeable or do I have to use another plastic handle?

try and find one for an earlier model the beds/tailgate are all the same from 93-current.

Head to your local junkyard. That's where I got mine.

Not to threadjack, but my tailgate handle is also broken. I have just taken the cover off and am pulling on the one side manually to open it, but I would like to fix it before winter. Can someone give me a quick description on how to take the old broken one out and put in a new one?

I don't remember how to change it out but I do remember that it didn't take long to do.

bduke23 - The repair is simple. You need to take off any bed liner cover, which usually requires a hex wrench. Then remove the metal panel that covers the tailgate innards. You'll see the mechanics for your tailgate handle. Next you'll need to disconnect the two rods that connect the handle assembly to the latches. Use a screwdriver or pliers to pry open the plastic covers, then pop the metal rods out. Make a mental note of where the rods were located so you can put them in the same spot upon reassembly. Next, there are two nuts holding the handle assembly in place. Remove those two nuts and (assuming that your tailgate is in the open position), the handle will fall out or you can easily pull it out.

Installation is the reverse. Slide the handle assembly into place, place the pincher assembly on top of the two handle screws, put the nuts back on and tighten, then reconnect the metal rods. It's a very easy process and you can't break anything.

The handle you are looking for is sold through RockAuto.com for about $30. It is made by Doorman, part number/item number 79603. Not sure what other search it comes up as, but I did my search for 99 ford ranger exterior. Its an all steel unit that is much more sound than the plastic one I replaced.

On eBay free shipping, black metal $9, chrome $15.

I think there used to be a company that did casts of your part you wanted in metal, such as a tailgate handle, they would cast it then fill it with the specified material and then you'd have that part in metal. I need to see if I can find that again.

Not to completely hijack the thread, but are there metal door handles available too? Preferably chrome.

Thanks for that info. I picked up a chrome one.
