Critters in the engine compartment never work good, mice chew wires and get into air cleaners. By the way, Ford calls it the MIL(malfunction indicator lamp), yes, I know it used to say "check engine", now it's an amber colored cartoon.
Rats got into the air cleaner in a friend's 68 Bronco that he had left at his deer lease, made a nest, and chewed up most of the plug wires and hoses. A snake found the rats, presumably ate them, and left its skin in the air cleaner when it shed..... circle of life, ya know.
We replaced the hoses and wires, and fired it back up....
