how many cats should an 01 4.0 have? mine has 3 which seems rather odd. i know you cant remove all of them but if i removed one or 2 would that still be legal?

They are all there for a reason. Ford didn't just put a few extra ones on 'just for kicks'

the two closest to the engine are resonators.. the other is a cat.. be careful i took the cat off and gutted mine in my 98 and it seemed to not have enough bk pressure now i gotta find another one to put on it .. i lost mpg also... btw aftermarket cats are alot cheaper than oem

No ford wouldnt have, but I have seen a couple people put on an extra cat or an extra muffler in place to quiet ( i know it sounds retarded but i have seen it) or add more back pressure claiming it helped low end power..... so not likely but not impossible this could have been a similer incedent. That said I know my ranger has 2 cats on it, could be you have 2 cats and a resonator, thats what I think it could be.
