Cats?

I have an 03 Ranger Edge and at 60,000 miles one of the cats melted down. It was still under warranty so Ford replaced all of the cats and the muffler. It felt fine but, now I'm getting close to 120,000 miles and there is some power loss again. I noticed that I have five cats, two off drivers side, one off passenger side to single in and two more in line then the muffler. How many cats are there supposed to be? This is nuts to have that many cats.

Huh? That does sound like one too many to me.....

I'd believe 4, but five sounds like maybe someone added an extra to pass emissions?

How many O2 sensors do you have? It being OBD-II I'd assume 4....

5 is the right number for the age of your truck. Newer ones like mine only have 2 though they are bigger.

Cats

I have four o2 sensers and Ford would have added the fifth cat because i haven't done anything to the exhaust. What would cause it to run rich? Also I looked up replacement cats from Summit Racing and they only show four. I'm thinking of going with the Magaflow direct fit cats and a Gibson cat back single in dual out swep side muffler. Any ideas on headers? Does my model have an EGR valve? Thanks for the input.

Bad ECT, O2 sensor, MAF, etc. Have any codes?
