The rear flange on my 2003 4.0 Ranger catalytic converter has rusted away to nothing and now I have an exhaust leak at that joint. Any easy fixes for this or do I need to visit a muffler shop?

Muffler shop would be easiest. And probably not cost much. They will just chop it off and weld on new flanges depending on how much pipe behind the flange is left to weld to.

If its rusted down to where the cat has nothing to weld to you unfortunately need a new cat. If you're desperate copper rtv will hold for a couple days maybe a week.

Thanks for your reply. I just did a quick search on YouTube and there are several videos on using a split flange. I might try to go that route.

If you have enough pipe left there are plenty of easy options. Depends what your working with.

I believe parts stores also sell a kit to put a new flange on. I never did it myself but was really starting to consider it for the same reason before I sold the CR-V.

I had that issue on the HHR and just “chopped “ out the flange and peiced in a new pipe section. On the escape I had a resonator rotted out right behind the cat and for $50 I had a muffler place remove it and replace with pipe. ( the escape has 3 total muffler things after the cat, the 1st one is not even 12” long, didnt hurt a thing to delete it ) My ranger is a cobbled up mess of adapters, pipe, flashing tin and hose clamps. To fix it right I need everything from the manifold to the end. The cat itself is split underneath between the two catalyst bricks. I tried jb weld there for the hell of it. Lasted about 7 miles.
