If I replace the carrier bearings, do I need to worry about changing the backlash?

it's not usually an issue but you should check the backlash whenever you remove the carrier, it will verify that you did not mix up the shims.

probably not, but you will need to add shims to get the correct carrier bearing preload, as the new bearings require more preload, as they will loosen up.

It definitely needs to be checked. No two bearings are ever identical. I would check the backlash before you pull anything and see where you are at. Replace the bearings then check it again. If your carrier bearings are really bad you may end up replacing pinion bearings also especially if things got hot or low on oil. Also be sure to check if the races spun in the housing. Some do show some sign that spun a little which does happen time to time. The thing to look for is that the races didn't cut into the housing or into shims.

They are not bad, just have it open so I though I should change em. Maybe I will leave them be. 300000 and 16 years on those bearings. Had a shop do the pinion bearing, new yoke and they set the preload.

My neighbor said to cut em off with a torch, sounds a little drastic to me. No signs of spinning, but pretty loose. I think I will change them, thanks for the tips.
