I couldn't find the right thread to put this in...so i hope this one works.

So i am replacing the carrier bearing behind the transfer case cause it literally blew up and me and the drive shaft was clunking around real bad!!! well i am trying to replace it with a new one...all the rubber and the old housing is gone...and all there is left is the bearing on the shaft. I used heat and a slide hammer and that didn't even make it budge at all. What else could i do to get that thing off of there?!?!?!

I have considered the one piece d-shaft but since i have had this extra bearing for awhile...i might as well use it until i find the time to get the one piece d-shaft. hahaha i hate bein cheap sometimes, but i love it so much!

Any help is greatly appreciated!

You might have to cut the remains off of the shaft. I've had to do that before. Do not use a torch, as you will have a really good chance of screwing up the shaft. Then you will most likely have to press the new bearing on.

well yeah...we just torched the bearing being careful not to heat the shaft to much. But i think cutting it is the way to go.

thanks for the advice!

So I got the old bearing off and put the new one on! I lined up the yoke and the same splines it was originally on and bolted up the u-joint the same way I took it off...got everything lined up like it was before. And well I took it for a test run and as soon as I hit 30 mph there is cuplant clinking and vibration from the d-shaft!

What the hell!?!?! I put on a new bearing and get no result from it! What do you guys think is the problem? I'm scared to drive it the 7 miles to my mechanic. What should I do?

Another thing you can check to is make sure your slip shaft is free to move in and out. If it doesn't it will chew up another hanger bearing in no time.

mine is doin the same thing, i replaced my carrier bearing to no avail as well. My doesnt matter on speed or gear. Ive got it narrowed down to T-case, tranny or clutch.

i had a shake for a while, a bad vidration mostl above 15-20 mph real bad at about 50 mph and settled a bit at 60-70 mph but still annoying and very noticiable, ended up putting a 1 piece d-shaft and problem gone!

turns out...the guys at the auto prats store gave me the replacement with the bigger bearing...which lead to the shaft wobbling around inside the bearing! hahaha well i took in the old bearing and the replacement and had the guys measure the old bearing and replace the new one with the right sized one! Then it was smooth sailing after that! problem solved...until i broke the shaft right in front of the pinion u-joint! god damn 10 years of minnesotan rust!!! so i swapped in a one piece which took 15 minutes of unbolting, cutting, and bolting up!!!!! now i in turn have a quieter ride and most important a reliable driveshaft!

Moral of the story...swap in a one piece drive shaft!!!!! I know you will love the results!!!
