the 87 nissan is having problems again. it was a pathfinder and a nissan truck put together into the truck at the junkyard. alot of stuff has been replaced on it over the years. about every 6 months it returns to its classic high idle. at about 1500 rpms.

last time it was the maf, and its timing was out of whack. it was retimed by ear as a quick adjustment and now idles at 1k but when we go up hills it has no power. i think it needs to be retimed. and a new carburator. the carburator is the original from when we got it.

any other ideas? it used to idle at 500.

Well, it sounds like you have an air leak issue.

I'm a bit confused about what a MAF is doing on a carbed engine though.

idk. i got on a nissan forum once and asked why it was "breathing" and they said clean your mass air flow sensor. i didn't know anything about it so i just put it in the shop, told them what info i had gathered, mentioned the maf it came out runnin just fine. this thing is such a pita to work on so i normally put it in the shop for this crap.

but this is 3 times in 3 years its been on the road, that its done this, so im looking for an alternative.

the damn shop cost alot. dumped 4 grand into one shop having this thing worked on all the time.

I'm not saying it doesn't. Nissan did all sorts of crazy stuff in the 80s. I'm just not sure why it would have one.

i know it has some of those wierd parts they used during the transformation to efi. it needs a new carb any ways so ill just throw one on.

ill tell ya, ill never buy another one of these nissan's again. ill just stick with rbv's. =]

Well, RBVs have their issues as well. Mine just recently decided it doesn't want to run anymore, PCM is full of water.

I'll stick with them over most other things too though. Better the devil(s) you know.

Ford went thru that too, try a 2.8 Ranger.

Yea I thought the MAF was only on FI engines. A MAP sounds more like it and a carb rebuild sounds more in order than a new one. does the carb have some wires plugged into it such as a TPS or feedback solenoid. Your gonna want to verify the engine timing and that the belt or chain are in good shape timing has alot to do with any adjustments you make on the carb. First the timing before you can do anything to the carb or you can just bump your head on the bumper and see if that works.

I just checked autozone and the 87 pathfinder and trucks all came with FI so what are we missing here.

i beleive that some of the pathfinders were carb. if his has 2plugs per cylinder then its definatly fi if it has one then its carb. i think

I can't see why you would need a MAP on a carb engine either. In fact, aside from the ones that run the gauges, the only sensor that I can see needing on a carbed engine is a cam position sensor of some sort. And then only if you are running an electronic advance intention system like the GM HEI's.

The 2.8s had a map with the feedback system in 83,84,85 and also on 4 cyls with the feedback carbs. From what little research I have done nissan went from TBI to FI in 86 to 87 and I didnt see any carbed engines in those years. I am guessing if he has a MAF the engine is FI.

i didnt put this thing together. i bought it from my stepdad to have another running vehicle. its definatly carb'd. and as far as sensors go. the tube that is supposed to go from the air filter to the fender is missing. always has been. idk what else could go on there. possibly something important.

ive seen no such sensors like on my explorer. and i know what that maf looks like.this engine just has its metal casing with a few rubber hoses on it. 2 under neath. 1 on the side. the circular air filter is in there. there could be tons of stuff missing from this thing.

about a year ago it kept blowin fuses and lights and stuff. so i traced all my wiring. the dude that put it together took abunch of random wires and spliced abunch of short chunks together to make a wiring harness. there was about 3 inches around of wiring in the fender that was all melted together. there was some ring or flange left on the truck when they did the auto to manual swap that messed up the tranny a few times.

i think the engine came from a 86 pathy.

ill just throw it back in the shop they always find a way to fix it.
