I have an 88' ranger 2wd 5spd with the 2.0 carb engine in it. I want to put a 5.0 efi motor in. I'm going to get the motor, trans, computer out of a mustang. What do I need to do to get this to work?

You can do it several different ways. The cheapest would be to get the fuel lines and tank from an EFI Ranger. If you get the tank from an '89 or newer, it is a plastic tank and a single fuel pump.

A

Is this swap any harder then a regular efi swap and do I need anything else besides a new gas tank and fuel lines?

There is a butt-load more stuff to do. Splicing the new engine harness into the ranger's harness, clearence of the intake to the bottom of the hood, smog, vacuum hoses. There's alot involved, but if you take your time and research, it should be fairly easy.

Compared to a truck that already had an efi motor it's alot harder? Why do I need do I need new fuel lines?

EFI has 3 lines.
1. Flow
2. Return
3. Charcoal canister(smog)

I don't know what a carb has, but I do know that EFI runs at alot higher PSI than carb. Maybe the carb lines aren't built to handle the higher fuel pressures.

But your truck had an EFI motor? or am I reading the post wrong? At any rate, you will also need to swap out the stock fuel pump for one out of a mustang(255lph).
If I did my research correctly, the mustang pump should fit just like the ranger's pump in the tank.

No the truck has a carb motor in it from the factory but I wanna put an efi motor and trans in it. I'm going to get the motor trans computer and motor mounts from a mustang thru prestige mustang. Just wanna make sure I get what I need before I start so I'm not going back and forth between working on the truck and waiting on parts I forgot to get.

What you are gonna want to look at is a Conversion Kit.

You will also need a larger radiator, probably aluminum, I got my conversion off ebay for $500 and it came with a 4-core aluminum radiator.

I'm assuming that the new transmission is a T-5 5 speed from a mustang? The new shifting location is about 7" back farther than where yours is now, so if you have a bench seat, it may have to go. Go with bucket seats.

You also need a new rear end either an 8.8 from and explorer or a 9 inch. Some welding will be needed here because you will have to relocate the leaf spring and shock mounts.

A body lift may also be what you want, or you could do what the library shows. Cut out a section of heater box and pound in some of the firewall.

Do I need that kit? Can't I use the mounts and oil pan from the mustang? The mustang already has a dual sump oil pan. If I get the mounts from the mustang I get the motor from I heard that I can just drill new holes in the crossmember.

No, no, no what ever you do, DO NOT drill new holes. The engine will sit way too low and the oil pan will hit the crossmember. You can use the mustang oil pan and there are 2 ways to do the motor mounts. Use the brackets shown in the kit(which you can buy separatly from Summit Racing) or get some motor mounts from a 4.0 ranger and fab up a mount like this guy did:

Is there any special conditions for puting the T-5 in? I know it's going to sit farther back but I thought u need to do something with linkage or for the clutch.

I think you need a full pedal and linkage swap from a mustang, or you can do what I'm doing and go hydrolic.

My ranger came with a slave cylinder system already, so now its a matter of fabbing a mount to house the new slave cylinder to the t-5. I had a photo of this set-up, but I lost it.
