Car Seat

I have been wondering this same thing. My kids are still pretty small, but on the once every great while occasion that I actually need the truck to go get something and everyone wants to go I think it would be fine. We never had to ride in booster seats until we were 10 when I was a kid and I can remember being about the age of my kids riding around with no car seats. Some days I wonder if the government has a deal with car seat companies.

So many kids not in a booster get killed in auto accidents every year. I have seen some real bad wrecks and seen kids come out alive 'caus there were in a booster seat!! Sometimes the crash is so bad that nobody gets out. Maybe it is up to fate?

I would be curious how many of those kids that are killed in accidents aren't strapped in their seat at all or maybe not even in their seat. I don't see many wrecks so I don't know a whole lot about it. I know my kids ride in their booster seats when we go places, but if I had an extended cab ranger and I went to make a trip to the recycling center and 2 of my kids wanted to go I would probably strap one in jump seat and one in the front seat without a thought. I probably wouldn't make it an every day thing though, and If I am just hauling kids I take the minivan.

When It comes to kids the only safe way is forward or rearward mounting. I love my kids too much to try anything else, even if it is feasible.

It's all written out in your local laws. They are created for a reason and any parent should be at least familiar with it when purchasing a car seat. A lot of parents slack off and don't think it matters or their kid is close enough to the cut-off weight, but when their kid ends up like this poor kid, then maybe they'll think again. He was probably under the height/weight limits and needed a booster seat. Notice the other slightly older and probably bigger kids stayed in their place and didn't get harmed. Not saying I know this for sure, but it sure seems like that's the case.

It's not a conspiracy, and the laws do seem a little overboard. But they continue to do research and statistics continue to add up everyday. So as information becomes available, the laws and car seats change to suit.

You said you rode in the jump seat since you were 2 years old. I thought you meant a kids car seat (carrier) in the jumpseat. I though all kids to a certain age had to use one? Is this not right?

That is correct these days. 20 odd years ago... not so much.

The jump seats in the back of my truck have never seen a car or booster seat of any kind attached. Any they never will. My kids (when I have them) will more than likely be about 10 years old before they ever even get in my truck.

Even sstill today at least once a month i see cars with kids in the back seat just climbing and jumping around. Not buckled or strapped in or down in any way. (alot of minorites especially, but not all). The government now issues certain credits to help get proper carseats from the welfare dept dont they? Its too easy to aqquire one and SHOW your kids you love them. Anyone who doesnt buckel them properly is just plain lazy.
