I turn the key and there is clicking by the battery, and no sound from the starter. Any ideas?

Yup....you got a dead battery. Now why or how it got that way is the fun part. Either jump start it, or charge the battery so you can start it. You want to check the output of the alternator while it idling. Should be 14-14.5 volts. ( put a volt meter across the battery terminals at idle.) Check your Batt. cables. Make sure they are in good condition, not alot of corrosion etc. It could also be a bad solenoid....thats what you heard clicking. Get these aforementioned items checked out in the order I presented and report back with your results. there is a possibility that there could be more to fix/replace but lets begin with the simple stuff first.

i jump started it. It worked the first time.... for a minute. It seemed like the battery wasn't getting any charge. Have the battery pulled to go to the zone in the morning. Might pull the alt too, if i have time.

tested the alt. It's bad. Bought a new one. And it looks like po cut the alt plugs. Any tips?

get a good connector with wires and solder the wires together but put some shrink wrap on the wires first get a connector from the bone yard or get one new and you can also use the shrink wrap with the adhesive on the inside to protect from moisture and corrosion. just make double sure you get the wires correct.

i have to find all the cut wires before i can even start fixing it. i don't even know why someone would cut the wires out and not even have a single wire going to the alt.
anyway, couldn't i just run a wire straight to the battery?

best you get a wiring schematic (a map of the wiring), check the Tech Library out...betting there is one there .

No, it can't just go direct to the battery. then there is no way for the battery to charge as you are driving it. Kinda sounds like that was done by the PO.

and...You'll end up ruining another battery in the process. Good suggestion is maybe snag a good wiring harness section from the J/Y. Might be the cheeper route.

the wiring is real simple do you have the connector for the alternator the easiest way is to go to the bone yard and get a connector cut the wires long enough to splice into your harness and then you can match color to color. Do not try and just guess if you have a wire fire you will be f-d.

got a alt harness at junkyard. and i didn't know that the harness plug is on the driverside inner fender.

I thought the 87 has a internal regulator on the alternator that connector is for a external regulator does your alternator have three connector posts or a 3 wire connector.

yes it does. I'm going to install everything in the morning. Too wet out yet for me to install.

wait, read what you posted wrong. It has 2 wires, just like the truck i pulled from.

i have everything hooked up. So far so good. Thanks for all the advice, still green yet.
