Can't get ticking in top end to stop!!!

toasted bearings won't reflect in your compression. The Compression should be relatively uniform across the board. (all 120's for example) what you are checking for is which cylinder(s) is the problem. Vacuum readings will also help determine valve/seal conditions. A leakdown test would be even more helpful, but still won't tell you if you fried your bearings. Stop driving if you want any chance at all of saving that motor.

as an example.....my 2.9 has a compression of 160 on all 6 cylinders. vacuum readings are about 21 in hg steady with no flutter increasing briefly to 26 when throttle is released. ( do some research in the tech pages, those are some good numbers).

From what i could see when taking off the upper intake is that cylinder 1 and 4 seem to have the most "snot" buildup in the lower plenum. I'll have to do compression tonight and get some of those numbers too. I'd really love to save this motor and have it last for myself. The motor has 177 000 original kms on it. It still seems to run strong aside from the ticking and obvious coolant in oil.

Ok Fabman you seem determined to NOT tell us what is going on with your engine. I'll ask some questions again anyway.
Is the dipstick higher than full? This would show coolant in the oil pan.

Ok so you are adding coolant from time to time. Most times this is form an outside leak.
Have you actually SEEN coolant in the oil?

The white smoke doesn't mean anything to me. I'd get to the problem of the disappearing coolant. AGAIN most times it is an exterior leak.

Then there are the ticking lifters. As you seem to be taking the engine apart, first thing to do is to take a rocker off and look closely at the rocker BALL.. Are the grooves still proment? They should be nice and deep. If not then the rockers themselves are worn OUT. The clicking can be caused by this shortage in the rocker.
Big JIm

how old is the motor putting new or rebuilt heads on a old motor your just looking to destroy the lower end also might as well stop the bleeding now with a rebuilt block and heads if you plan on running it for a while or even a good boneyard swap if your a gamblin man
